The album was recorded in early 2014 at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu and produced by Joel Little. The album has been described as "a very Australian" and "country" by many critics. Its lyrical content deals with a range of themes, including love, nostalgia, melancholy and hope. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2014, the album won the awards for Breakthrough Artist and Album of the Year. "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" was released as the lead single from the album on 12 April 2014, and became the band's first song to enter the Australian Singles Chart, peaking at number 13, and remained in the top 50 for six weeks. It won Best Dance Release at the 2015 ARIA Music Awards. On 18 October 2014, "Youngblood" was released as the second single from the album, and it became the band's second highest charting single in Australia, reaching number 24.
Background and release
After the release of the band's first EP, From the Top of the World, in 2011, 5 Seconds of Summer signed to Capitol Records and went into the studio to record their first album in the summer of 2014. According to lead singer Luke Hemmings, the band had a "very Australian" and "country" sound in mind from the start. Their manager, Julian Bunetta, said the band "[wanted] to create a record that captures the essence of who we are as a band and the people we’re from. It sounds like this record has been in the making for a very long time. I think the album is an affirmation of who we are as a band and how far we’ve come. It has its heart in the right place." The album was produced by Joel Little, who co-wrote five of the twelve songs on the album.
Upon release, the album debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart, and was certified gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) for selling over 35,000 copies in Australia. The album was described by critics as "very Australian" and "country". The album cover was designed by Robyn Rihanna Fenty and received a platinum certification from ARIA for shipment of over 70,000 units.
